SSP – Evo X MR track debut at the Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge

| You Tube | |
As some of you may already know the SSP Evo X MR received the invite to the Pirelli Ultimate track car challenge. I say invite because you had to create a blog on car domain.com and then the members vote on which cars get the invite to the race. We ended up being the 4th highest ranked car for the UTCC challenge.

Since I do not have my super comp race license that meant I couldn’t drive. No worries……I decided to give the reins to a former IMSA driver (Genady Soykher)
Needless to say I checked and rechecked everything on the car to make sure it would be able to handle a pro driver on one of the hardest road course’s in the country…….VIR (Virginia International Raceway) And if that wasn’t enough pressure for the track debut, there were record setting temperatures the entire weekend. And I’m not talking 90 degrees folks, I’m talking 105-108 degrees with 100% humidity. On track temps in my car were reading 117 degrees. And that was with the windows down after two laps.
Knowing that heat is the enemy of any DCT (dual clutch transmission) we came well prepared with a SSP front mount cooler, deep trans pan, and Pro Red transmission fluid. And keep in mind this isn’t your average whp MR here. This is currently the Worlds Highest HP Evo X MR on the planet, and we then decided to take it out on the hottest day at VIR since 1974.
All I can say is she preformed beautifully, with NO slow down messages. The car Shifted like a dream all day long, no matter how hard we pushed it. Hitting over 140 mph on the back straight a VIR is pretty impressive. Even more so considering this is the first time it’s ever been to the track.
The PUTCC started out great, well kinda. The transponder was broken so when we should have been in the middle of the grid after qualifying, we had to go to the back of the pack. Considering the level of cars, pro drivers, and simply stupid amounts of HP most of the competition had. Also take into account Ganady (the driver) had 0 seat time in my car, or any DCT car ever. So for the first time out laying down a 2:38 lap time wasn’t that bad. And keep in mind it’s not his car, so he didn’t want to ball it up into a tire wall. Ended up running a best time of 2:22. I’d love to see what he could do with the JRZ set up and some practice time in my car. I was running the basic BC coil over set up and it felt very good. Genady didn’t make any adjustments…..just rocked it out.
And since the car ran so well (thanks MDR performance) I decided to sign up for two days of HPDE. And not to tut my own horn or anything, but I didn’t get passed once either day. My instructor was very impressed with my skill level and quickly moved me up to DE2 (intermediate) And on the second day we even started working on a few of the DE3 (advanced) driving. Once again the car did it’s job, and had no issues whats so ever. Handled great, and stopped on a dime thanks to the boys at Works Motorsports for sending me out a set of there Evo X sways bars, and Orange Race pads. And I have to give a big shout out to Jay at Torque Solutions for the hook up on all the engine mounts…..my god does it shift and feel so much better no that the motor and trans aren’t slopping around. Basically felt like a braced up the entire front of the car…..very impressed.
I’d also like to send a special thanks to Toyo for the 265-35-18 R888’s they supplied for the race. They held up great even in the extreme temperatures, so much so I had no problems even after racing all day Saturday, and Sunday. Even though most of the field were running full race slicks the car still was able to hang with similar HP cars in our class.
I lost count of the number of laps the car ran all together, but there were 4 25 minute sessions for the UTCC, and I did another four 25 minute session on Saturday and Sunday.Best part of the weekend was getting the invite by the guys at grassroots motor sports magazine for a exclusive on track photo shoot for the magazine cover. Only 6 cars out of all 76 entries was asked to participate, so needless to say I felt honored.
I’d like to thank all my sponsors for making this possible. I couldn’t have done it with out you.
